Khan Archiver

Welcome to the official support page for Khan Archiver – a mobile app that captures and organizes KhanAcademy videos.

First and foremost: This app is in no way affiliated with Khan Academy itself. It is my small contribution to KhanAcademy’s awesome products. Take a look and support them at: Khan Academy

About Khan Academy

  • A free world-class education for anyone anywhere.
  • The Khan Academy is an organization on a mission. We’re a not-for-profit with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere.
  • All of the site’s resources are available to anyone. It doesn’t matter if you are a student, teacher, home-schooler, principal, adult returning to the classroom after 20 years, or a friendly alien just trying to get a leg up in earthly biology. The Khan Academy’s materials and resources are available to you completely free of charge.

About Khan Archiver

  • This mobile app will let users download and manage amazing Khan Academy videos on local mobile devices.
  • It is free right now and will always remain so
  • The project is developed using Titanium Appcelerator. I planned to release for iPhone/iPad and Android. So far the iPhone version is waiting approval while the iPad is in testing stage. It is open-source and available at Github
  • Please let me know if you want to help out. I will authorize you as a collaborator on the project

Current issues

  • Finish up some layout differences for iPad release
  • Downloading will reset after pause (no resume mechanism). I already contacted Appcelerator and they already filed a ticket for this.
  • Fix some glitches while posting on Facebook feeds (social sharing)

Usage Notes

  • Under the Browse tab, do not apply “Refresh” button too often (probably just the first time around) because the list from KhanAcademy is huge. Also, it may mess up the current “Archive” structure. (As awesome as KhanAcademy products are, I am a little concerned of how frequently they move their categories around in the API)
  • Only those items under “Browse” tab with an arrow key will have child section/video. I will try to pull text information as well next release.
  • Did you know: apply a ‘longpress’ on a video will allow you to share it via Twitter/Facebook. Cool hah?
  • I was planning to work on an iPad release as well. But Khan Academy already has their own official app. It is absolutely amazing with all features (homeworks/reviews…) not just limited to videos. Check it out here

I have a question. If I download files in a different order than the one presented on the khan academy website, which is theoretically the “correct order”, will the “Archiver” put the files (videos) in the correct order? By doing so it would organize the information in a way that is easier to the student to follow the subjects. I hope I made myself clear. Thanks.

You are right! I didn’t take this into consideration. As of right now, the “Archiver” only stores videos in downloading chronological order. I will definitely include topical/level order for the next update release.
      Thanks for the suggestion.

I was just thinking the exact same thing. It would be great to have the correct sequence!
You have done an excellent job!
        How often are things updated?

Hey Jennifer, great choice! Khan has great videos with straightforward examples.

I, and along with some other users, tested the app and they were all audible up to this point. Can you point out specifically which video does not have sound?

I can’t get audio on the speakers, but I can via headphones. This is on an iPhone 4. Overall great app! Thanks

I was wondering if this app uses internet because I’d like to watch the videos when I don’t have wi-fi

The app does require you to have wi-fi in order to download videos. Once they are downloaded, you no longer need wi-fi and can watch the videos offline. That’s the whole purpose of the app. So my recommendation is to find a wi-fi zone, retrieve all videos that you are interested in and munch on them later on.
      Good luck buddy!

hey Phil, I’m glad that you like the app.

I didn’t take AirPlay into account when I developed KhanArchiver. Nor do I have the right iOS version to test it out. But it seems like AirPlay is an integrated feature any movies/music player on iPhone/iPad — so it should be supported in KhanArchiver video mode as well.

      Hope that helps

Hi, thanks for the app. Does it automatically change according to changes, additions, etc. on the main website?

Thanks for the app. When they update with a video in middle of Algebra, lets say, does this app automatically update with it?

I was thinking something similar to this a few days ago when practicing for the SAT test here in the U.S. I agree that it can definitely improve our educational system, but it’s just one piece in a jumbled puzzle — at least here in the U.S.

Hi! I just downloaded this app on my 2nd generation iPod Touch. I have already downloaded the videos I wanted and as I tried playing it, it just has that loading sign for approx 5-10 minutes, and it just wouldn’t load. Does it work on the 2nd generation iPod Touch (version 4.2.1)?

I don’t have an ipod touch 2nd gen to test it on. But my development methodology is generic and does not rely on iOS device’s specific functions. Thus, I think it should work. Try to remove the app and reinstall it.

By the way, does it work when you just stream it instead of downloading it?

Dumb question. How do I watch videos? I’ve downloaded several, but they won’t play on my iPhone 4s. Nothing happens when I tap on the video link after it’s downloaded.
    Thanks.

that’s really odd. Some other users experienced the same problem but I couldn’t duplicate it.
Perhaps the download link expired? Can you even watch it live without downloading it?

ah, that’s definitely an internet connection timeout problem. Try re-downloading it with wifi instead of 3G

Can you add subtitle to the mobile version in portrait mode? By moving video upward instead of put it at the middle of the screen today, there will be a lot of space left. Thank you!!!

I download the videos, but when pressing on them, nothing happens. I can only watch videos (when it uses YouTube directly), but can’t use this when not able to use data network.. :/

Uhm, so you completely changed the archive when I was half way through a subject. I don’t mind if you add more but I didn’t download all of the videos for that category and now what am I supposed to do?! Please put the ones you just took down back up :(

Oh I do not have control over the archive. it’s still ported from Khan Academy. I am not sure what problem that is you are having :O

Love the app Ethan. Really good of you to make it free in the spirit of KA. Thanks.
Just some quick feedback from my end:
It would be nice to have a little checkbox or something so you can mark off the downloaded lessons you’ve already viewed.
Also, would be nice to have different sorting options or just the default order from KA applied to downloads, to make it easier to follow a topic when presented in multiple video segments.
Overall, awesome app so far! Keep it up!

Hey Christopher, Thanks for using the app and being supportive about it. I am so swamped right now with work and some other projects to make a living.
Hopefully when I have time, I will come back to improve Khan Archiver!

      Meanwhile, stay tuned!

I will do this once there is enough migration on the newer iOS. Because optimizing it for iPhone 5 will stop the app from working on lower iOS version

I updated with the last upgrade where everything is in alphabetical order… I preferred it the other way by subject listing. Thank you for providing this app

I took this into account but it seems like Khan Archiver’s subject list from their API is not very well-organized
